The ’70s were over and I was relieved to have survived them, though not without damage. What would the future bring? Some people in my situation would have read their tea leaves or cloaked themselves in nostalgia. I went to work.

I moved back to New York. I spent more and more time with Lennon and Yoko. We’d had similar experiences, and we understood each other perfectly. The baby-brother affection I had for John grew. It was good not to feel alone.

And my career was moving. My next album, Scary Monsters, was a big hit. The critics loved it, and it sold.

As a declaration of intentions, in the single “Ashes to Ashes” I buried all the heroes I’d created in the ’60s.

Living off my past was not an option.
